Maid in Manhattan is a modern day "Pretty Woman" that stars Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes. Before I had seen this movie I had never heard of Ralph Fiennes and by first glance of the box cover, I wan't real impressed. I didn't think he was good looking enough to pull off the leading man who sweeps you off your feet kind of role. Boy was I wrong. His character (and even his looks) sort of grow on you throughout the movie. In the end you find yourself just adoring him and glad the movie ended up the way it did.

The story behind Maid in Manhattan is that Jennifer Lopez lives in New York with her mother and son, who is about 10ish? She's a single mother, struggling to make ends meet while working in a menial job as a maid in a lavish hotel in Manhattan. She secretly has ambition to do more with her life but all the while in the back of her mind she doubts herself ... doubts that are brought on by her mother who has time and again told her to accept who she is, what she has and just be happy with her place in life.

Through the help of a devoted friend, Jennifer is up for a management job. As a hard worker who never takes any chances and focuses on getting by day to day, she is the ideal candidate for the position. Only problem is, this same friend convinces her to do the unthinkable and while cleaning one of the suites in the hotel, they try riffle threw the closet of one of the guests and try on some of the clothes. Right of the middle of this, another guest of the hotel comes in and catches them so to play it off, Jennifer Lopez pretends to be a guest in the hotel, not revealing that she is in fact the maid. The story then revolves around her meetings with this man, who is politician ... a future senator in fact. As her and the man get closer, she realizes she has to tell him the truth but in typical love story fashion, knows he'll never probably speak to her again if he finds out the truth. I don't want to ruin the entire movie for you so I'll just sum it up to say that like all good fairy tales, things work out in the end.
